Michigan Sporting Teams

 

Michigan is very fortunate to have a variety of excellent sporting teams throughout the state and especially in Traverse City,  Michigan. Some of the college sporting teams include the Mount Pleasant Central Michigan Chippewas, the Ypsilanti Eastern Michigan Eagles, the Big Rapids Ferris State Bulldogs, the Allendale Grand Valley State Lakers, the Sioux Ste Marie Lake Superior State Lakers, the Ann Arbor Michigan Wolverines, the East Lansing Michigan State Spartans, the Houghton, the Marquette Northern Michigan Wildcats, and the Kalamazoo Western Michigan Broncos.

 

The Michigan High School Athletic Association oversees all of the high school sporting teams. League teams include the Detroit Dogs (ABA), the Grand Rapids Griffins (IHL), the Detroit Rockers (NPSL), the Flint Generals (UHL), the Lansing Lugnuts (MLPBC), the Michigan Battle Cats (MLPBC), the Battle Creek Michigan K-Wings (IHL), the Port Huron BorderCats (UHL), and the West Michigan Whitecaps (MLPBC).

Professional teams in Michigan include the Detroit Fury (AFL), the Detroit Lions (NFL), the Detroit Pistons (NBA), the Detroit Red Wings (NHL), the Detroit Shock (WNBA), the Detroit Tigers (MLB), and the Grand Rapids Rampage (AFL). Stadiums in Michigan include Comerica Park - Detroit, the Palace of Auburn Hills - Auburn Hills, the Joe Louis Arena - Detroit, and the Van Andel Arena - Grand Rapids.

 

The Northern Michigan University has a great selection of sporting teams for both men and women. The men's list of sporting teams includes football, golf, basketball, skiing, soccer, swimming, and ice hockey. The women's list of sporting teams includes cross-country, golf, basketball, lacrosse, indoor track and field, skiing, outdoor track and field, soccer, swimming, and volleyball.

The University has a long list of national championships including the 1994 women's volleyball team, the 1993 women's volleyball team, the 1991 men's ice hockey team, and the 1975 football team. The University has been national runners-up four times including the 1995 women's volleyball team, the 1992 women's volleyball team, the 1992 women's swimming and diving team, and the 1980 men's ice hockey team.

The university also hosts the United States Olympic Training Site. It is one of the 16 Olympic training locations in the country. The NMU-OTS is well-known for providing both secondary and post-secondary educational programs for athletes while at the same time offering a world-class training opportunity. The University of Michigan has more than 70 resident coaches and athletes which makes it the second-largest training center in the United States for the Olympics.

 

The Northern Michigan Wildcats ice hockey team is a team from the Division 1 National Collegiate Athletic Association. The Wildcats belong to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, and the team has won a national title. It also has been involved in three Frozen Four appearances. The hockey team plays their home games at the Berry Events Center which is located in Marquette, Michigan.

The current player's roster includes some promising USA players including Connor Frantti from Spring Grove, Illinois, Tyger Howat from Brighton, Michigan, Jarrett Lee from Hibbing, Minnesota, Denver Pierce from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and Troy Loggins from Huntington Beach, California. Of course, the Northern Michigan Wildcats men's ice hockey team is only one of the many successful teams from this well-known Michigan University.
